![]() He is the hang-gliding safety officer for the Auckland Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club. He now trains others to fly hang-gliders and takes people for flights in tandem. Patrick has flown hang-gliders both in New Zealand and in other countries, including flying alongside condors in the Andes mountain ranges of South America. He said it looked like fun and just had to do it. Patrick has always been interested in flight and was intrigued when hang-gliding first started. Many people enjoy the thrill of flying a hang-glider – Patrick Monro, director of Aqua Air Adventure, is no exception. Meet Patrick Monro – passionate about hang-gliders This turns them into microlights and means they can take off and climb from flat ground just like a normal aircraft. Some hang-glider pilots attach small motors and propellers to their hang-gliders. If there is a stronger breeze, the glider will start gaining altitude. For example, if a glider is flying over a vertical coastal cliff and there is a light breeze blowing in directly from the sea and the air is being forced vertically upwards by the cliff at 3.6 km/h, the hang-glider can fly along the cliff without losing height. In order to not lose height, a hang-glider must find air going up as fast as the glider is descending. A hang-glider descends at the rate of about 1 metre per second (a slow walking pace of about 3.6 km/h). If the air is still, it will slowly descend. The aerofoil is then drawn up into the area of low pressure, producing lift. Meanwhile, the downward and forward motion of the wing compresses the air flowing under the wing. The aerofoil forces the air flowing over the top of the wing to travel faster, thereby ‘stretching’ it to produce a low-pressure area. The aerofoil shape of the wing stops the hang-glider from dropping like a stone. The weight produces the thrust that keeps the aerofoil moving through the air. ![]() This is the weight of the pilot and the wing. Gravity is the main force on a hang-glider. It has to be launched from somewhere high like a hill or mountain. The same degree of knowledge of flight theory, meteorology, air law, and navigation is required as for hang gliding, and you will need to be skilled in special airspace restrictions that apply to powered hang gliders, although they are not very difficult.Īnd, surely, as well as the paramotor, if you do not want to fly with the power you can just use a conventional harness.Since a hang-glider is unpowered, it can’t take off from low ground. These two elements are further put together to learn the powered flight. #HANG GLIDER PROPELLER HOW TO#You will also be explained how to explain torque and thrust effects and told basic safety issues. #HANG GLIDER PROPELLER FULL#A full hang gliding course covers assembling and launching the wing, airspeed control, turning, approaching and landing.Īfter you master these skills your instructor will switch to the power unit and teach you how to start the motor, control the throttle, and undertake basic routine maintenance. Learning to fly a powered hang gliderīefore taking your first flights under power you first need to learn to fly a conventional hang glider. On the other hand, you can just soar around, sightseeing, or reach a chosen destination using much less fuel than a microlight, watching the beautiful view that all hang gliders enjoy. Powered hang gliders, which take-off and land on wheels, are classified as microlights, and thus are outside of the scope of the BHPA.Īn ordinary foot-launched hang glider, powered by a small engine fitted into the pilot’s harness, offers the ability to take-off from any rather small, flat field. You may as well decide to keep your engine running and simply set course for a distant objective, watching the fascinating landscape unroll beneath you.Īnyway, you will be enjoying one of the simplest forms of powered hang glider flying. In ten minutes you reach the first cloud and switch off your engine to conserve fuel and begin to thermal as you would on a conventional hang glider. It is like a normal hang glider take-off, but you start from level ground and then you immediately begin to climb. ![]() Then take a deep breath and begin to run. ![]() The motor is droning behind you as you walk to the start with your powered hang glider to the start of the take-off zone in a beautiful field. ![]()
